Kultur 1

I really liked the German blog on American food that was on the reading list for this weeks Kultur assignment. Quite a few of the titles made me laugh, like "Was genau ist 'Cooked Ham.' " I took a look at "Die besten 75 Rezepte von USA" to get a sense of the kind of dishes that they were including - and it was a pretty solid list. For breakfast things like pancakes and french toast, for entrees BLT and chili, for dinner meatloaf and fried chicken, and for dessert apple pie and pumpkin pie, among others. Overall it was a pretty standard list, although of course the USA is so multicultural there really isn't American food, just a mix of Italian, British, Mexican etc.

The article on queueing seemed a little too exaggerated - I never noticed anything like that when I was in Germany, all the lines for things like the U-bahn were pretty orderly, although I might not have been there during rush hour.

I have to admit I've never been to an Aldi. Not that I'm rich or anything, I've been to GFS quite a few times, but for some reason I've never had an opportunity to go into an Aldi even though they're apparently quite common. I like the idea of it though, kind of an IKEA for food. Very efficient and "German."

From what I've heard of the Autobahn it's a little overhyped. Apparently there aren't too many stretches where it has that unlimited speed limit. The driving culture itself is very interesting in German from what I've heard. They make it very difficult and costly to get a license and have a car, so they can be a little looser on things like speed limits on the autobahn.
