One of the primary reasons why I wanted to learn German is
that I'm very interested in cars and Germany is where a lot of car
manufacturers and part suppliers are located. For my first AMD, I watched
several video clips of a German motoring TV show called GRIP on RTL. The first
clip I watched featured German Police looking out for modified cars on the
street. While there were long interviews I could not understand for the most
part, I was able recognize some words I learned in class. Even slightly
modified cars getting pulled over and being towed made me remember how strict
the road laws are in Germany. Next clip I watched was about finding a good used
Porsche 911er in a certain budget. Instead of long interviews, this clip had a
lot more driving and technical descriptions so it was easier for me to follow.
Last clip I watched was about 3 modified cars all reaching above 700PS; BMW M3
by Manhart Racing, Mercedes CLS63 by PP Performance, and VW Golf R by HGP. I
was especially amazed by the Volkswagen; a normal looking hatchback faster than
Ferraris and Lamborghinis.
Despite the fact that I can't understand most of what's said
in these videos, watching all these amazing machines is a joy in itself. I hope
to become fluent enough in German someday so that I can enjoy these videos and
German car magazines even more.
