AMD 6: Das Wunder von Bern!

For AMD 6, because of my passion for soccer I decided to watch the movie "Das Wunder von Bern", which was released in 2003. It is one of the most famous German movies, and in the end, I must admit it fascinated me! I had watched some scenes many years ago, but I never got to see the whole movie, so now was a good chance to do so. The movie takes place in 1954 right before the soccer World Cup final.
First of all, the story was about Richard Lubanski, who returns after being a prisoner of the Soviet for 11 years. The movie shows how he struggles to adapt to the new way of life once again, as he sees his family moving on against the Nazi ideals that they were used to believe in. On the other hand, Richard's son Mattias shows his love for football, which was not considered as a high class sport back then and admires Helmut Rahn, a soccer player from Essen who played for the German national team but would always stay on the bench. Richard is against football and tries to persuade Mattias against it as well but eventually he understands, and they reconcile, while Richard decides to take Mattias to the World Cup final in Bern against the superpower of soccer at that time, Hungary. During the world cup final, Rahn is affected when he sees Mattias watching him, and was able to score a goal to to win the world cup for Germany.
For the record, Hungary was considered the strongest team in the world, reaching the final in 1938, and winning the gold medal in the Olympic Games of 1952, and were leaded by Ferenc Puskas, one of the best players to ever play soccer, and one of the leading goalscorers of all time. Hungary started the game with 2 goals during the first 8 minutes, but Germany was able to respond in 2 minutes, after it started raining a lot, which slowed the Hungarians, and so Germany was able to be more aggressive and take more chances. On the 18th minute of the game, Helmut Rahn scored to tie the game. During half time, since the rain was not stopping, the Germans used one of the greatest innovation in soccer, the screw-on studs on the shoes, designed by Adi Dassler (which as his name reveals, was the founder of Adidas, and this world cup final actually made Adidas famous). The Germans were able to control the game, and 5 minutes before the final whistle, Helmut Rahn scored with his weak left foot to turn the game around and win the 1st world cup that Germany ever won.
Back to the movie, it is shown how many miracles can happen simultaneously; how things can happen when least expected. One of the miracles is how Richard manages to reconnect with his family and how he gets to bond with his son whom he had never met because of his imprisonment, by bonding with one of the ideas he hated: soccer. The other miracle, is how Germany was able not only to simply win the game against Hungary, but even to turn it around from a 2-0 deficit. The sudden rain which was not expected was a miracle according to the coach. For Helmut Rahn, it was a miracle to see Mattias in the stadium right before he scored. In the final credits, it is shown how this world cup was a miracle for the whole German nation, which had been through a lot after the end of World War II.
I found the movie very inspiring, I definitely suggest it, especially to soccer fans, but also to everyone, because it shows how miracles happen every day in our life, when we least expect them to.
